Boston World’s Fair is proposed.

May 25, 1881

After New York City abandons a bid to host the 1885 event, Boston business leaders discuss the proposal at a meeting at the Hotel Vendome. The prospect of Boston hosting the event prompts the New York Times to write, “If Boston can go on and succeed after New York has backed out, it will be glory enough to content the modesty of Massachusetts for the rest of the century.” Beacon Park is subsequently proposed as the site for the event and architect William Preston draws up a preliminary plan. But the group abandons the idea as “impracticable” in January 1882.
